Types of AI: Narrow AI vs AGI vs ASI Explained
Not all AI is the same. Learn the difference between the AI we have today and what's coming next.
AINow Take
All AI we have today is 'Narrow AI' — great at one thing, helpless at everything else. AGI doesn't exist yet, and claims that it does are exaggerated. The gap between today's AI and true general intelligence is still massive.
There’s a lot of confusion about different “types” of AI. Here’s the clear breakdown.
The Three Levels
AI is categorised into three levels based on capability. We are firmly at Level 1.
Level 1: Narrow AI (Weak AI)
What it is: AI designed for a single task. It cannot generalise beyond what it was trained for. Does it exist? Yes — this is all AI that exists today. Examples: ChatGPT, Google Search, Siri, Face ID, Netflix recommendations, self-driving cars Key limitation: ChatGPT can write a novel but can’t book a flight or make coffee. It has no ability to do anything beyond text prediction.
Level 2: AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)
What it is: AI that can perform any intellectual task a human can. It can learn new skills, adapt to new situations, and reason across domains. Does it exist? No. Despite claims from some companies, no system has achieved AGI. Estimated arrival: 2028-2035 (optimistic), 2040+ (realistic), or never (pessimistic) Who’s working on it: OpenAI, DeepMind, Anthropic are the leaders
Level 3: ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence)
What it is: AI that exceeds human intelligence in every domain — creativity, problem-solving, social skills, scientific discovery. Does it exist? No. This is purely theoretical. Debate: Some think ASI will follow AGI quickly (the “intelligence explosion” theory). Others think it may never happen.
Common Misconceptions
“AI is already conscious”
No. Current AI has no consciousness, self-awareness, or subjective experience. It’s advanced pattern matching.
“GPT-5 is basically AGI”
No. GPT-5 is extremely capable narrow AI. It still hallucinates, can’t plan reliably, and has no persistent memory or genuine understanding.
“AI will replace all jobs”
AI will change jobs, not eliminate them. Like the internet did. New roles will emerge that we can’t predict yet.
What the Experts Say
| Expert | View on AGI Timeline |
|---|---|
| Sam Altman (OpenAI) | “AGI可能在几千天内” (a few thousand days) |
| Dario Amodei (Anthropic) | “2026-2027 is plausible” |
| Demis Hassabis (DeepMind) | “Within a decade” |
| Yann LeCun (Meta) | “Years to decades, current approaches won’t get us there” |
| Yoshua Bengio (Mila) | “Hard to predict, but we should prepare” |
Why It Matters for Australia
Understanding these distinctions is important for Australian policymakers and businesses:
- Regulation should target real risks (Narrow AI), not hypothetical ones (ASI)
- Investment should focus on practical AI applications, not AGI speculation
- Education should prepare for AI-augmented work, not AI-replaced work
